Here are some important facts that all consumers should know about the moving industry:

1. The interstate moving industry has been all but unregulated since 1995, when Congress got rid of the Interstate Commerce Commission. Since the moving industry's deregulation in 1995, authority over interstate movers has been in the hands of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which is nominally responsible for interstate movers, but who's focus is on reducing crashes. The agency has just three employees who monitor movers and cannot intervene on an individual consumer's behalf. It says on its web site that "FMCSA does not have statutory authority to resolve loss and damage consumer complaints. Consumers are responsible for resolving disputes. Consumers are responsible for taking motor carriers and brokers to court."

2. Complaints about movers have more than tripled in the past decade, according to the Council of Better Business Bureaus, with 9,405 lodged in 2003 alone.

The increase in rogue moving companies has never been greater. Choosing an ethical moving company will save you time, money, and headache.

3. Less than 20% of all moving companies offer "actual replacement value insurance." The liability coverage that most movers offer isn't actual insurance. It's an obscure formula regulated by the Department of Transportation. The basic coverage only pays you 40-60 cents per pound. So even though your Waterford goblet is worth $80, if you were to make a claim for it, you'd get less than a buck because it's lightweight.

4. If your move is job-related and your new work site is at least 50 miles from your previous one, your moving expenses could be deductible.

5. It's customary to tip professional movers about $25 each, according to Realty Times. Feeding them isn't required, but pizza and sodas are usually appreciated.
